MARPLE, Pa. – Delaware County Community College’s Office of Institutional Equity hosted a celebration for Diwali, the festival of lights, on Thursday, Oct. 23, 2025.
The faculty-driven event, held in the STEM building lobby, was organized by Uma Garimella, dean of the STEM division, along with Professor Bela Dadhich and Professor Thejo Prasad, who arranged food, activities, and a presentation.
Diwali is India’s largest national holiday and is celebrated by multiple religions, including Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism. It is observed in diverse ways throughout different parts of India and has many meanings, but all celebrations are centered on community.
“It is more about the community and kids, not just temples,” Garimella said.
Colorful, traditional Diwali decorations filled the lobby, including a large arch with hanging flowers. The event began with the lighting of the Diyas, or candles, by the guest of honor, Dr. Marian McGorry, Vice President of Academic Affairs. Afterward, Prasad gave an informative presentation on Diwali and its traditions.
Attendees were invited to participate in activities such as making bookmarks and decorating them with stickers. Following the activities, participants sampled Indian cuisine, including samosas, rice, mango juice, and rice pudding.
Garimella, Dadhich, and Prasad wore traditional Indian attire. Garimella and Dadhich wore saris representing South Indian culture, while Prasad dressed in a salwar kameez representing Northern India. The organizers said they hosted the event to “showcase the country” and promote knowledge and diversity at DCCC.
