Delaware County Community College is already a month into the Spring 2010 semester.
As the men’s and women’s basketball teams rap up their regular seasons on Feb. 3, the winter athletics season will conclude and the Spring season will begin.
The men’s basketball team has made the playoffs again this year and will play on a date and time to be determined. The men’s team can potentially play the Community College of Philadelphia, Montgomery County Community College, or Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in the first round of the playoffs.
The women’s basketball team did not earn a playoff position this year, but have improved greatly since last year.
“They had their season cancelled last year due to lack of involvement,” said Andrew Johnson, Director of Wellness, Athletics, and Recreation at DCCC. “It was a big improvement to finish the season this year.”
This spring, DCCC has men’s baseball, women’s softball, and co-ed tennis to look forward to. All three sports will be played in the Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference.
The men’s baseball team has already begun practicing and is set to play its first game on March 3 at Harford Community College in Maryland.
Paul Motta returns as coach of the men’s baseball team, as he has coached every year since DCCC has had a baseball team.
“Look for outfielder Travis Wramble and catcher Andrew Dunn to lead DCCC on the field this year,” said Andrew Johnson. “They were two standout players from last years season.”
The baseball team will play between 30 and 35 games this year. They look to improve off of a fourth place finish and a first round playoff elimination from last year.
The women’s softball team will begin to practice in the first week of March and are set to play their first game against Lehigh Carbon Community College on March 27.
“We are still interviewing potential coaches for the softball team,” said Johnson.
Last year’s softball season was cancelled due to lack of participation, but Johnson is optimistic about fielding a solid team this year. “I have received a lot of interest in the softball program this year,” said Johnson.
The softball team will play a 16-game season this year.
Co-ed tennis will begin practices during the first week of March and the team is set to have its first match against Harrisburg Area Community College on April 1.
Megan Barclay will return for the third straight year as coach. The tennis team will play a nine-game season this year.
The baseball and tennis teams practice and play all home games at the DCCC Main Campus. The softball team will play at surrounding township fields.
All games and matches are free to attend, and students are encouraged to come out and support their school.
“We will have some raffles and giveaways at games sometime in April,” said Johnson. “Athletes should talk up their sports more to spread the word about their team.”
The schedules for all teams are posted on the DCCC Web site and outside room 2507 (near the cafeteria).
Students interested in participating in any DCCC sport should contact Andrew Johnson, Director of Wellness, Athletics & Recreation, in room 2507, by phone 610359-5354, or email at athleticsdept@dccc.edu.
