Aspiring writers and artists have an outlet at Delaware County Community College to showcase their work. The Pegasus literary magazine will be coming out with a new issue, and there is ample time for those interested in art and writing to submit and share their finished products.

Pegasus Literary Magazine was started in 1969 by Professor D. Petrella. It began as a student run publication and was published twice a year. The magazine featured the same content as it does now: creative writing, poetry and artwork.
Associate Professor of English Gina Gennari is in charge of the magazine. “I have been with the magazine for six years now,” Gennari said. “I had previously expressed an interest in managing Pegasus and was happy to be able to work with it.”
Ryan Rose, 22, a liberal arts major, is the new editor of Pegasus. “The magazine caught my eye,” Rose said. “I picked up a copy and was very interested in learning more about it.”
Rose had previously taken English Composition II with Gennari. “I feel that by taking on the role of editor of Pegasus, I can strengthen my skills as a writer,” said Rose.
He is currently enrolled in the Creative Writing I class and plans to continue with Creative Writing II.
“We’re working on how many articles we can get published,” Rose said. “Right now we haven’t received many submissions but we’re hoping to change that.”
The editors are not allowed to submit their own writing as they are already in charge of the running the magazine and putting together the final product itself is considered their own piece of work.
Gennari believes that the magazine can progress much further this year with the proper committee. “We are putting together a formal committee,” said Gennari. “In previous years, there wasn’t any meeting where the staff members could sit down and discuss what was going into the magazine. Members would just vote without giving any feedback.”
Gennari says that the biggest problem is staff membership. “We can’t really vote when we only have a few members. We’re looking for many people to get involved.”
The magazine is looking for all types of submissions. “There are many great writers out there,” said Gennari. “We just need to get people to open and contribute to the magazine.”
The Pegasus staff tries to make every publication a big event. “We hand them out in the spring,” said Gennari. “We like to hold a reception to celebrate the new edition. One year we handed them out along with packets of candy.”
The magazines themselves are free for any student or faculty member to obtain. Gennari also plans to attract attention to the magazine by expanding its boundaries to the Internet.
“One of our plans is to create a Youtube commercial,” said Gennari. “We’d like to make a Facebook page and we’d like to post sound recordings of submitted work. Ryan wants to work on getting a blog online and we’re really hoping to get these ideas off the ground.”
The Pegasus Literary Magazine also has its own Web site at www.pegasuslitmag.weebly.com. For those interested in submitting their work, the deadlines are Dec. 4, 2009 for the fall semester and Feb. 9, 2010 for the spring semester.
